Members of the 2009 graduating class of the William S. Richardson School of Law dance "Na Hoa He`e Nalu," a song that celebrates friendship, surfing, and meeting challenges --- whether in the ocean or in life -- and the satisfaction that follows. The song compares the grace of the surfer to the `iwa or frigate bird -- greatly admired by Hawaiians for its beauty and skill. The surfer exhorts friends and companions to come and enjoy the surf ... soar on a high wave and, gliding like an `iwa, eventually return to land.
"Na Hoa He`e Nalu" was written by famed musician and composer, Irmgard Farden Aluli, grandmother of graduate Napali Souza, and by noted Hawaiian scholar, Mary Kawena Pukui. This dance honors the family, friends, and surfing companions of the graduating class. "Na Hoa He`e Nalu" was sung by Irmgard Farden Aluli's daughters Mihana Souza and Aima McManus.
