There are still 27 houseboats, boats on floats on the mud, but eventually all will be brought up to code. I spent a night or two out here a long time ago, maybe it was just a nap. I can't remember. But I didn't sleep in a houseboat. It was a steel shipping container. Less than a hundred yards away are houseboats starting at $700k.

  • as far as I know the boat Roberta lived on is still there. this is where I was born and raised.. the community is rich in culture, community and love. all the people who lived there were and are like blood family to those raised there. They say it takes a village and I was fortunate to actually have been raised by one. I am super proud of where I came from and have many gifts from many places due to the people and the music from which I came. I <3 gate 6 and the people who were there for me

  • I lived on the Xanadu at West Pier during middle school. I had lots of friends on the "mudhuts."

    Miss it terribly.

  • I was looking for La Boheme, the boat that I lived on for a few years that I bought from Dova - that Roberta and her family moved onto after I moved back to New York in '95. It must have finally got sucked under the mud. Thanks for posting this piece, it's nice to see the surviving houseboats. Peace, Gordon
