While there are many of ways to see Lanai's diverse terrain, including the excellent resort shuttle system, renting a Jeep allows you to explore some of the islands 400 miles of unpaved roads.

Dollar Lanai Car Rental is our favorite place to rent a Jeep and is located in the heart of Lanai City.

From there, it's just a few minutes before you're on your first unpaved road, heading towards the ocean. Make sure you always have your Jeep in four wheel drive and if you take the top down, expect to get very dusty.

The key to off road driving is to make sure you are indeed in 4wd and don't be afraid to take it easy, especially if you don't have much experience driving offroad. Also, don't be afraid to get red dust all over you--especially if you take down the soft-top.

Seeing Lanai's sites can be done in a day, so be sure to pull over regularly and take in the breathtaking views.

It's not long before the terrain becomes rocky--a sign that the trail ahead of you is about to do the same.

About 45 minutes outside of Lanai, on Polihua road, you'll come to Lanai's Garden of the gods. Rock towers, spires, and formations were formed by centuries of erosion and, on a clear day, you can see the island of Molokai.

Just a little further on, you come to the secluded Polihua beach. Two miles of pristine beach--where you'll likely find more sea turtles than people--is a great place to feel the sand between your toes, or dip them in the ocean.

OK, we need to get to the other side of Lanai, so let's hustle.

Lanai's 8-mile Shipwreck Beach has wrecked numerous ships along its shallow, rocky channel. In fact, the hull of a ghostly oil tanker from the 1940s is still beached on its coral reef.

There are lots of other great sites to explore in your jeep, but be sure to check which areas your rental company has marked as off limits. While you can still technically get to these places, you do so at your own risk.
