I found some footage a couple of days ago of Anton Dolin (1904-1983), Diaghilev Ballet Russe dancer and long-time partner of Alicia Markova. It shows Dolin performing on stage in a London review of 1930 - 'Charlots Masquerade'.

I've fronted the film with photographs.

The first section has images of Dolin's Ballet Russe roles - 'Le train Bleu' of 1929 (which showcases his almost acrobatic talents and is accompanied by the music Darius Milhaud composed for that ballet) and then 'Le Bal' (with Alexandra Danilova and Serge Lifar).

The following section shows the next stage of his career - now in partnership with Markova. Photographs are principally of them in 'Giselle'. And I've added music from one of Giselle's Act 1 solos.

The last section of course is the footage of 'Charlots Masquerade'. I've used a part of Jacques Offenbach's 'Gaîté Parisienne' as it seems to capture something of the spirit of the review.

  • i was very lucky to meet Anton Dolin back stage when i was 11 years old,at brighton,he was dancing swann lake, and le fille ma garde.he was still dressed in his ballet costume, after the performance.it was such a thrill.

  • hi angelawarman - you were very lucky - and often it is luck - many of the people i met when i lived in the UK were just by chance - well-known and otherwise. so together we've met them both!

  • Thank you for this short tribute to Sir Anton Dolin, I enjoyed it immensely. A very well deserved tribute.

  • hi PureSoapCleans - for such an important dancer (one of diaghilev's last great male dancers) and markova's partner) there's precious little out there - a very small adjustment!

  • hi Qbendanny

yep, he looks particularly good in his 'le train bleu' days in his coco chanel beach costume

  • hi vstasov

it was very interesting to find an example of that other aspect of his work - reviews

and the acrobatic aspect of his technique that i knew about from 'le train bleu' is in evidence here too in review - in the lifts and traveling lifts
