I've always been fascinated by trains. A train track ran behind my Grandmother's house in London, Kentucky. I always looked forward to visiting her because I knew the train schedule and would run out several times a day so I could wave at the conductor as he passed by. It was always a thrill when he'd wave back.

@lloydhofer I did that too. If I'm at a railroad crossing I still count the cars.

I like the rhythmic sounds of trains as they pass. Once lived with the tracks next to the back yard. It's an obsession I can't explain but I've always had the irresistible impulse to count the cars. When they passed at night I didn't even have to look, I could count each car by the noise of its wheels on the tracks.

@shineyK9 I think the grownups were perturbed. But I was a little kid so it was exciting. And my uncle was an engineer and drove one of the trains. So, we'd wave at him as he slowed down and he'd toot the horn (which probably was even more irritating to the grownups) as he passed by. But I thought it was wonderful, magical.
