On November 7, 2003 ABC World News Tonight aired an in-depth story on zero tolerance school discipline policies. The catalyst for the piece was Advancement Projects report: Derailed: The Schoolhouse to Jailhouse Track. The story featured an interview with advancement project senior attorney Judith Browne, Palm Beach juvenile judge/advocate Ronald Alvarez, and a Palm Beach parent whose child was charged with criminal mischief for throwing art supplies around in a classroom.

@clarkewi I was in a class of high school students once. Many student were good and a few were bad, The specialized school I went to for LD/ADHD had a great character of students and was very innocent, but the 1 year in public school I saw students who screwed up and did things they should not have, but they still need guidance once kicked out. I guess I am arguing for an in between rule of not zero tolerance but not anything goes. Sorry for the delay getting back on the email.

I understand why the zero tolerance policy is in place, but I think its gone overboard. Come on, arresting a child for misbehaving on a field trip. A brief suspension would be good, not an arrest.

I am hoping to get my CA teaching credentils in about a year. Wish me luck. I am also 100% against zero-toloerance policies. Why on God's earth would educated professional adults ever imppliment such a policy that will cause harm to last a lifetime on youth is beyond reason. Yes, often, schools need very tough diescipline. In my grade school, it was done with a wooden paddlle. It worked! Bring the board of education back! Bring acountablilty back!
