Max is 3y6m and has suspected verbal dyspraxia (the official diagnosis is imminent). He has received some speech therapy, but with limited results so far.

He was a bit distracted by the television playing in the background in this video!

  • Sounds alot like Dyspraxia.. my son is 3yrs 3months and was dx'd at 15 months of age (he couldnt chew foods and would swallow them whole.. all part of the oral motor disorder). You can see that your son knows what he is trying to say.. doesnt say them correctly, alot of omissions etc.. and if you say it wrong he corrects you. My son does all that stuff too. Best wishes to you, its a tough road but Im confident our kids will both do really well as they get older. Main thing with this disorder

  • @lucieann21 Thank you. Max has now been diagnosed with "not severe" Verbal Dyspraxia. We've started on nuffield dyspraxia and he's doing well with the worksheets, but guess it's going to be a long journey.

I had a strong suspicion that he had dyspraxia when he was about 2yr2m, although I spent a long time being assured by the experts it was a delay or his ears etc. He didn't really have any eating problems, although he did struggle with using a straw for a long time.

  • I was diagnosed with profound Verbal Dyspraxia. My verbal communication didn't progress, but my speech therapy did help me with using alternative forms of communicating (e.g using a communication devise).

I understand competely how difficult Varbal Dyspraxia is, especially with the bullying, frustration and social isolation. I was constantly bullied by other children for not talking.

I am highly confident and optimistic your child speech will improve with time.

  • How is Max doing with his speech? I'm a speech therapist in northern New Jersey and get great results with children with Verbal Apraxia, in case you're near or would want to refer someone to me. I am also open to giving suggestions (via email or phone) for activities that work well. noellemichaels@hotmail.com

  • is to not push them to say things.. and as they are very much aware at this age that they cant talk the same as everyone else try to make sure they arent self concsious etc.. I say to my son "Im sorry... mummy's ears werent on.. let me turn them on and you can say it for me again" etc etc.
