The Fourth is the first Mahler symphony I formed a very strong attachment to. That probably explains why I have 10 versions of it on CD. This is a somewhat obscure version but I really like it.

Mahler's skill of lyrical counterpoint is unexcelled and it is displayed nowhere better than in this movement. Although I like the 4th movement as a song, the symphony could end with this mevement and it would feel satisfyingly complete to me. But then I am not a musician.

  • I've been looking for that recording of Mahler 4 for ages, I'm so sad it's out of print now .. iI love it, t’s just wonderful.

  • @SignorinaTurandot I feel lucky that I grabbed it when it was issued. A terrific bargain too as It was on a budget label (EMI Eminence)!

  • Thank you so much for this posting, a rendition of this movement that is truly moving!

  • Many thanks for posting this recording of Mahler’s 4th Symphony. There is a copy listed on eBay if anyone is interested.

Professional reviewers often dismiss this rendition by Wesler-Most on the grounds that the 3rd movement is “excessive” being over 24 minutes long! Yet to my ears at least there is no hint that it is being ‘milked’. I have listened to others ranked amongst the best ie Szell, Fischer, Mackerras & Levin yet this is my preferred version.

  • @yingdat Ok, I officially envy you:) I discovered this recording when it out of print in my country, and now I'm looking for it but with no luck and I don’t think EMI will make an re-edition anytime soon, but on the other hand during last few years they made re-editions of most of Franz Welser-Möst recordings with LPO. Anyway enjoy the recording is splendid, I like Franz Welser-Möst’s interoperations of music he conducts.
