On the opening night of the US tour, Joanna Newsom performed at Calvin College. After the show, all people were invited to stay for an artist conversation where audience members could ask questions to Joanna Newsom and band mates. The resulting conversation was excellent.

Some of the questions might be unclear, so I transcribed them the best I could.

(0:00) host introduction

(1:49) Q1. host: What are you reading?

(3:48) Q2. So I'm a creative writing major, and I'm really amazed by your lyrics and I really love them. I was wondering, what is your writing process like?

(4:52) Q3. With the composition and then the percussion line being what it was and adding that in, how did that change then how it was that you wrote if it was so dependent upon what the music was doing at the time

  • That dude is a freaking douche!!!

  • @aarossell Although I have no doubt Ken is a cool dude, and this is an amazing opportunity for the audience here, I think 18-22 is mature enough to be able to structure a Q&A, don't you? Still, I'm incredibly jealous that nobody arranged for Newsom to visit me when I was in school.

  • @ritzlikethecracker You know nothing about him, and have a sour attitude about this setting. Ken hosts artists with high integrity and wants the students (think mostly 18-22 year old kids) to keep in mind that respect for the artist. Their private life has nothing to do with their craft which they warmly showcase. Don't let those thumbs-up go to your head, it appears most Youtube commenters are pretty stupid.

  • @owint1 Hah, I'm sure a bunch of losers on YT complaining about having to hear him lay down the rules will bother him terribly. I live near the school, many of my friends went here recently, and Ken has a huge reputation for being a great guy. He genuinely cares about good art and wants the popular artists with the highest integrity to be welcomed by a college which reciprocates that integrity. I really hope you grow up soon and realize you don't know anything about anyone.

  • I really hope this prof has watched this and read about what a dick he is

  • Ugh. I'm hopelessly in love with this woman. The biggest creative inspiration I've ever had.

  • No boyfriend questions, no tour bus questions... lol. And keep it under 15 minutes. Yessir!

  • @Kaniki80 HAHA, well said!

  • Professor???? I bet he can't make a two way radio out of a coconut!
