Brasilia, Brazil
June 23, 2009
To the delight of the small Filipino community who traveled from the different parts of Brazil to the capital city Brasilia just to see President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, she spent almost an hour mingling with them, personally finding out how they are doing in Brazil, conversing about their Filipino roots and the families waiting for them back home, and informing them of the economic resiliency of the Philippines in the midst of the global economic turmoil.
There are roughly 400 Filipinos in the whole of Brazil, many are missionaries and professionals who have been in the country for five years or more. That is why the visit of President Arroyo, which is the first from a Philippine president, has a significant emotional effect on the Filipinos who crave for the familiar warmth that is uniquely ours.
Even the Brazilians feel excited and honored to have the Philippine president as state guest.
President Arroyo will be flying to Rio de Janerio tomorrow afternoon, June 24, (early morning of June 25, Manila time) after meeting with Brazilian President Luis Inacio "Lula" da Silva.
