The technical explanation for the nasty mouth thing is that when the body starts burning fat, the fatty acids are broken down into ketones to be utilized. Ketones come in three varieties, one of which is acetone (yeah, the nail polish remover). The body does not use that stuff so it comes out in the urine and in the saliva.
