Mao Asada answered in a TV interview when she was a 6th grader that her favorite book was "Urayasu Tekkin Kazoku (Family)" ; a comic book (Japanese Manga) which illustrates a crazy family and their daily life full of madness. This series was once the most popular comedy comic amongst Japanese kids, and was later animated into a TV show. Now, knowing the kind of graceful ballerina type skater Mao is, it's hard to imagine she was a great fan of "Urayasu Tekkin Kazoku" which was famous for its vulgarity. However, Mao often names comedians when asked which celebrity she likes (as she does so in the clip about Yoshio Kojima; a comedian who once made big-time), and if you see videos of her off the ice, anyone would agree that she's got lots of humor and loves to laugh. So, assuming "Urayasu Tekkin Kazoku" as being one of the roots of who she is today, I made this clip in which its characters cheer and support Mao. I uploaded this once before without English subtitles, but since I got requests, well, here it is again. The subtitles may be hard to read cause the images shift quite quickly, so in that case, sorry for the trouble but click pause. Hope you'll all enjoy this. I love MIki, Yukari, Nana, Yukina, Daisuke, Nobunari, Takahiko, and most skaters from other countries (especially Sasha, Kimmie and Plushenko), too. But Mao is really special to me. She always fills me with hope and courage. I wish her all the best in the Olympic season!
P.S.1:In the scene where little Mao is asked what her favorite food is, one of the characters of the comic book calls her a 'true Nagoyan' because of her answer; red miso soup. Red miso is a type of bean paste which is used in many Japanese dishes. It's quite popular in Nagoya which is her hometown, and most of it is made in that district.
P.S.2:In the latter part of this clip, there's a sequence of videos of Mao doing the victory pose, but in Japan we call it the 'guts pose'. It was named that way after Guts Ishimatsu; a once world champion Japanese boxer, and an orangish colored photo of him appears for a second in the sequence.
P.S.3:The end bit of this clip is really vulgar so be ready. I know some people would prefer the clip without it, but that last scene is the essence of "Urayasu Tekkin Kazoku" comedy, which I guess made Mao laugh when she was a kid. Kids love filthy jokes, and from this end sequence, I wanted to appeal that Mao was an ordinary fun-loving kid like the rest of her generation. Her parents might have been wealthy enough to pay for her lessons all these years, but Mao spent her early years in a normal public elementary school, nothing private nor fancy. She's no upper-class girl who can't take a joke. And although as a skater she is definitely special, as a person she still has that friendly kid in the neighborhood spirit inside her, I think.
