No other video game community can come close to the FGC.

    "What is a block"

You're not talking as someone who has never played fighting games, you're talking as someone who's never played a videogame.

When watching that clip you do not lose anything from not seeing people's faces, you can feel it in their screaming, that something amazing has just happened, rather than leave someone saying "ok who are they and what are they yelling about" they see something that already looks impressive presentation-wise on screen that they can ask about and learn.

Assuming I am someone who has never played any fighting games I would still be confused by your explanation. What is guard damage? But how do I push foward when Im getting hit? What is a block? Moreover, without any experience it would be hard to see the value in that. It simple for us because we already have some knowledge, we know what we are watching and why it's awesome. This images are simpler to understand. And that any game can cause this doesn't take away the value from this.

I'm not saying that showing crowds is forbidden but not including any context or gameplay in what is pretty clearly meant to be for the uninitiated shows a misunderstanding of what really gets people interested in competitive games/sports.

They're simply mimicking promotional material for traditional sport but fail to take into account that traditional sport does not need contextualizing to almost anyone in the world as we have all had it integrated into our lives in some way shape or form.

"And just explaining the parry mechanic? That's far more complicated"

You push forward at the precise moment an attack hits you, and you block it without sustaining any guard damage, doing a parry of many hits in succession requires pretty intense concentration and knowledge of the interval between hits.

    Fuckin' rocket science.

Saying "Oh they're playing fighting games" doesn't have nearly the same effect because any game at any skill level can cause this amount of hype.

As you said, this can be explained by a simple "they're playing fighting games". That says, fighting games can bring this up, look how important they are for some people and look how they can bring something good. And just explaining the parry mechanic? That's far more complicated. I mean, look at 2:10, that's what EVO can do and you will never understand it from just watching gameplay footage. I don't think this video is better or worse that showing gameplay, but I do think it has its own value

"Well, it could help to expand the number of people who watches"

Again, the method in which this video is distributed ensures that is not the case.

There's not much difference between not understanding why the Daigo Parry is awesome, and not knowing what's on the screen, both result in not knowing why there is hype.

The difference is the daigo parry can be explained thoroughly through describing the parry mechanic, this is explained by saying "they're playing fighting games"

Well, it could help to expand the number of people who watches. I could show the Daigo parry to someone who never played a Fighting Game and he wouldn't be able to really see why that's so awesome, but everyone can see the value in this. Also, everyone does EVO best moments gameplay compilations, this is something more especial that only the guys at EVO can do, because they are the ones who get this kind of footage.

Why would they display things in a way for non-fighting game players to understand when the method of distribution ensures minimal viewers of the video are non-fighting game players?

You really think in the Daigo parry, and Justin Wong MvC2 videos, people could not feel the emotion of the crowd because they were seeing the hype in context?

In a sense this is more valuable that gameplay footage. Everyone can see the emotion in the crowd, even someone who hasn't ever played a fighting game can see and understand why EVO is great from this video.
