@5w33t200: their mom died before the show began, so we don't know too much, just that there was a drunk driver involved, so Uncle Jesse and the dad's best friend, Joey, moved in to help the dad (Danny) raise the three girls. He isn't "away" really ever, but he does have to go to work like most people, so when the youngest, Michelle, was still a baby, they needed someone to take care of her when Danny worked, that was where Jesse and Joey came in.
