Lowe's home improvement expert, Mike Kraft, gives tips on planning and designing a waterwise back yard landscape that uses water efficiently.
There are 7 steps to waterwise landscaping:
Planning and Design
Preparing the Soil
Create Practical Turf Areas
Water-Efficient Plants
Using Mulch
Efficient Irrigation
Proper Maintenance
Before you begin any project that involves digging, call 811 to contact your utility company so they can mark all service lines. Also check local landscaping ordinances.
Plan out the areas of your house and yard with a drawing plan of your property. Try to draw this map to scale. Make a few copies to try out different designs.
Next, establish water use zones. There are three types of zones: arid, transitional, and oasis zones.
Depending on where you live in the United States, different types of grass would be best for your lawn. You can find regionally mixed grass seed at your local Lowe's store.
Use plants that are appropriate for your growing region. To find your growing region, go to www.lowes.com/plants. Then sort plants according to their needs and water use zones.
