Author Terrence Dean discusses his latest book: Hiding In Hip Hop - On The Down Low in the Entertainment Industry from Music to Hollywood.

Film by Troy Johnson, AALBC.com June 2008

About the Book:
About the Book

A riveting memoir, Hiding In Hip Hop, uncovers a hidden and well-known unspoken secret. Deep within the confines of Hip-Hop is a prominent gay sub-culture. A world that industry insiders are keenly aware of, but choose to ignore. From the testosterone of men striving to be on top and in control, to the "by any means necessary" bravado in an industry that thrives on power, homosexuality is a reality at nearly every level of Hip-Hop. Hiding In Hip Hop is a heartfelt sojourn of a young man searching for self, love, and sexual identity in the most homophobic places -- the black family, community, church, and Hip Hop. Dean takes readers on an emotional rollercoaster ride as he becomes romantically involved with some of Hollywood's and Hip Hop's elite, and into an underground world of down low brothers, sex parties, and love starved celebrities. Struggling to find a place for himself in a homophobic culture Dean's compelling story is one of hope, love, and in spite of everything, coming to terms with one's self and being a catalyst for change and empowerment in the game of Hip-Hop.

  • The fact that a man is married these days is not fooling anybody. A lot of peeps know that men and women get married for image sake. When Will Smith played that role in 6 degrees of seperation, most men were like hollywood don't have enough money to get me to play that role. I also found out that Will Smith went after that role it was not offered to him. My point is this, that just because a man is married means nothing anymore. I take it case by case basis\, Will has a lot of fem attributes.

  • I don't really get the fact that people say if they come out of the closet it will hurt their careers because Queen Latifah is a big star and you can clearly see she is gay. Also Will Smith displays fem attributes all the time and that has not stopped his career. Most people said when Will Smith was in that movie 6 Degrees of Seperation his career was over, but not the case as a matter of fact he blew up after that. I think most ppl would be more like who cares be it right or wrong.

  • Will like dick bottom line, shid Jada lick pussy, ect. Tupac use to try to get wid jada nmbut she was a dike

  • @75bari: It does not matter if he really kissed him or not....just look at the image he projected. When he was caught getting sodomized in that bedroom scene it had a big impact on the viewers and it accomplished what it was set up to. Time to grow up and see the bigger picture. There is something greater then Will Smith at work here. You have to be a certain type of person to play a role like that....trust me.

  • @BLKJEW01 will smith did not really kiss that man.

  • @thegodsend: Well, I meant that he was making excuses for his gayness.

  • @knowledgeiswhatsup I totally agree with you! He said he was raped and before that, he never thought of having sexual encounters with other men. He said it out of his own mouth. That shows proof that male on male rape and homosexuality is closely related. #HIP-BY-HIP!

  • @BLKJEW01 not all gays are effeminate though, but I see what you mean.

  • @MsBlackie07

TY! U hit it right on the head.

Why elude to outing rappers in his book if he isn't going to name names;book sells?

The 'gay rapper' thing is fairly new to me(I'm ole skool); I use to take it as rumors but w/ recent news of Mr.Cee & Chingy I gotta say I believe it now & I'm curious who is what? I don't & wouldn't take their sexuality as an affront to my masculinity (I'm still a fan) but I know many if not most men would.Yea,I know we shouldn't care but I still wanna know.

    1love
