They had a go at pylon racing at Coolangatta in the '80'. Most of those involved in the warbirds came along. But one of the biggest hits was Guido Zuccoli in his Iraqi Sea Fury. Fantastic sound and sight. Guido also had his Fiat G59B and a Harvard. Col Pay had his Spitfire and Mustang. Geof Trappet in his Mustang. Later they took the pylon racing to Tasmania.

  • Ex RAAF, Sigsop.

Darwin, I'm walking up the outside stairs of Equipment Store, Shell Gates behind me, off to my right, a W.A.A.F., Sharon, two steps behind me.

All of a sudden, I heard the 'Fury, on finals, behind me. I looked back to my right, saw the Fury about 200 metres just over the Shell Gates, as it passed, I raised my right arm, punched a hole, and yelled, OH YES!.

A PURE moment in my life.

Sharon had no idea, she just said, "Sarge, are you alright"?.

    "Bloody Oath"!

  • @twinstu50 Thanks for those comments. Right from the heart. Sent a shiver down my spine and I recalled those times when he pulled up over Toowoomba. Magic. If only he knew the legacy that he left. A wonderful man.

  • @camsbits1 Uh oh, alter ego snuck in! Yep, great memories.

  • @CorrectiveAction Guido had that effect, flew well and made it look so smooth and left lasting memories. Thanks for commenting.

  • I was at a very early Avalon Airshow (cant remember which year) but the display line was 90 degrees to the runway, and a lot of "fly in" GA aircraft were lined up along the crowd front. It was the year they had a LOT of rain the week before if I remember. Anyway Mr Zuccoli flew the Sea Fury along the flight line (just in front of the GA aircraft) and not more than a wing span off the ground. More than 20 years later I still remember it with a smile.

  • Darwin, 1974, I was looking at a Bristol Centaurus engine on display, I asked ' J. H', "This is pretty rare, how'd you get it".

    He said,

"Guido had engine trouble, it was streaming smoke as he landed, so he taxiid straight into the hangar, and as the D.C.A were looking to 'shut him down', we did the fastest engine change ever, so when 'they' came out to inspect, it was all .ok. and this is the 'dud' (siezed/oil feed) one.

J.H. said, 'they' knew, but could'nt prove it.

  • @planesounds A wonderful man. A completely fine man.I never met him, but I met two or three in the N.T. who met him.

They all say the same, A MAN!.

  • Guido RIP.
