In this show we discuss ways to get a good gaming experience despite a money constraint.

Each month we will have one show about game design. This month's game design topic is progression in gaming. We then review a game, Harvest Moon, that has very little progression.

The progression discussion on the noobtoob forums can be found here:

http://www.noobtoob.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=136395#136395

The video was done using DAZ 3D Studio (a free download), Mimic for DAZ Studio, and Windows Movie Maker. Special effects were done with Adobe After Effects and individual pictures were done in Photoshop. Audio was done with Audacity.

I hope you enjoy the show. Please leave your comments, questions, or suggestions in the feedback section below.

  • yeah! Put RPG-like progression into everything and you end up doing nothing.

The unlockables-feature is the death to replayability and gameplay.

Imagine that: Harvest Moon, but in the beginning you can only milk a cow and sell the milk. You need to repeat this process 10 times to gain a level to unlock "kill cow for meat". Do either of those 10 times to unlock xyz. Fun? No!

Limited options lead to limited strategies and those lead to dumb games.

    Less "Progression"/Limitation, more Presentation!

  • THANK YOU PAC-MAN!

  • harvest moon has almost has the same gameplay as chibi-robo for gamecube were you clean up a house. but this one has you do a farm roleplay

  • Why are you a M&M?

  • this guy must be really poor i doubt he has any new games he has to wait untill there under 15$

  • nice vid hahahaa funny with the boy. IM opening my mouth !!! =O

  • Nice vid man. Harvest moon is definatly one of my favorite series.

Personally though, I think HVM: A Wonderful Life is probibly one of the worst in the series imho

If you get the chance, check out:

HVM: Magical Melody on gamecube or better yet

HVM 64 for the nintendo 64.

I find these two to be more representive of what makes the HVM series truly great.

  • Fable is a game that has fantastic progression, some of the best I've seen... WoW also has some fantastic progression, but it can be rather slow sometimes

anyways, I've heard Harvest Moon is amazing, but I've never really gotten into it. thanks for this review, I think I might rent it the next time I see it, or hell, even buy it if its below $10 or so...

  • Another classsic video. I couldn't agree more on the importance of progression.

  • you, my friend, are great! 5* and a Sub.
