A random clip from the 1938 German movie 'Die Vier Gesellen' starring a very young Ingrid Bergman speaking very good German.

Plot:

Four girls graduate from an arts academy in Berlin, knowing full well that it'll be hard for them to ever have a proper career. Their now ex-teacher is in love with one of them, Marianne (played by Ingrid) but she refuses to marry him despite the fact that she loves him, too, because she feels he only wants a housewife to feed and clothe him and she wants to prove she can do more than that. Thus, she and her three friends start the little publicity company 'Die Vier Gesellen', 'The Four Companions'...

This clip is from the very beginning of the movie, when the last class has just ended and Herr Kohlund asks Marianne again to marry him, but she gets angry because she feels he doesn't appreciate her. Which he, at this point, kind of really doesn't.

  • Thanks. Very interesting. Ingrid Bergmans mother was german. In the Donald Spoto-Biography you can read, that Ingrid was a very unpolitical young girl. Later she said, that filming in nazi-germany was a great mistake.

  • Yeah, she literally didn't care about politics - I don't think she ever really got into it - and at the time she didn't quite realize there was something seriously wrong there, though as she actually got there she was apparently pretty shocked. I do really like this film, though :).

  • when ingrid acts in Swedish and German her voice sounds more High Pitched than American... Does anyone else feel that way?

  • I don't know... hmm, maybe it's just because she was younger? What do you think about her voice in 'Höstsonaten', the Swedish movie she did when she was in her sixties? No idea actually :).

  • your right about Höstsonaten, it is deeper, I forgot about when she was older... maybe ti was the quality of film? America probably had better technology back then.

  • Yeah, possibly, plus I guess people's voices always go down a bit when they grow older, even women. I think Ingrid's voice in her first American movies, e. g. 'Intermezzo', was a bit higher than it was later on, too.

  • She speaks perfectly german! I love her so much! Great actress!

  • Yes, that's the other point: the german "Ufa" produced many quite good films between 1933-1945.
