After delaying his summer vacation for a day, President Bush left for his Texas ranch confident the situation in Georgia was not getting worse but angry about what the Russians had done.

"Bullying and intimidation are not acceptable ways to conduct foreign policy in the 21st century," President Bush said Friday [08-15-08]. "We hope Russia's leaders will recognize that a future of cooperation and peace will benefit all parties. ... A contentious relationship with Russia is not in America's interest. And a contentious relationship with America is not in Russia's interest."

The president of Georgia on Friday signed a new cease-fire agreement, which the president of Russia is expected to reciprocate.

In Tbilisi, Georgia's president said he only agreed to a cease-fire because of Russia's overwhelming might.

"We are looking evil directly in the eye," Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili said.

In a news conference with Secretary of State Rice, Saakashvili said NATO's refusal to offer Georgia membership invited the Russian attack. And he warned other former Soviet satellites of a return of the Russian bear.

"They will still keep advancing. They will keep killing. They will keep destroying other countries. That's what they are trying to do to my country right now as we speak," Saakashvili said.

Rice, who brought the cease-fire agreement for Saakashvili to sign, insists that it doesn't change Georgia's sovereignty over two rebellious provinces.

In other Georgia news, Turkish broadcaster NTV says four Turkish journalists were fired on after they crossed the border from Georgia into South Ossetia. NTV says this happened Sunday [08-09-08] at the South Ossetian capital of Tskhinvali.

One of the reporters was even shot in the head, but that shot was not life threatening. NTV says afterwards the journalists were detained, interrogated and assaulted by Russian officials. They were eventually released and returned to Turkey late Wednesday [08-13-08].

  • If every man in Russia was in the army, each man holding a machine, and two years of his life he gave the Russian army ... You sit and you believe the news, and they washed your brains, your democracy is not worth a penny .... You are rotting nation the United States, ... And Russia is invincible. And if Russia would fight as well as the U.S., the world would long ago there was not one of the country except the RUSSIA!

  • Do you think that Russia should attack Georgia, South Ossetia has always been Russian territory, so Russia is not fighting, is that you sit in their America and did not know, it's U.S. tanks capable of shooting civilians and throwing nuclear bombs on the city. If Russia had to invade Georgia, Georgia would have been wiped out. You have no idea what the power possessed by Russia.

  • @Desspite Afganistan war I think there are russian army grave yeard take a look...(there are many many many more battles where russia got beaten) If americans would have invaded Japan there would be even more civilian and military deaths there is no doubt about that. Of course dropping nuke is still brutal.
