Traditional vs. modern textile industry. In developed countries almost all traditional work in the textile sector is done by machinery. This trend will continue in the future threatening jobs in developing countries, where (currently) wages are lower than the costs of technological investment. The problem today is that only a few people benefit from the use of technology and money. But the majority of people in developed and developing countries are forced to work a great deal to avoid unemployment and make a living. Increasing economic inequality causes tension in society, resulting in crime, violence and wars. Extrapolating this trend into the future, it is evident that we need a systematic change so that society as a whole will profit from increased automation. See The Venus Project for more information.

  • I'm not talking simply about the art or hobby aspect. Handweaving is not the only way to rebuild a community, but it's one way. It can and it does. You can have a community of weavers in the most remotest of places. It doesn't take sun, wind, water or oil to produce cloth and you will always find a human willing to work. Mass production of cloth has been around since weaving was invented and really took off with the advent of the flying shuttle, of which you don't need a power loom.

  • @rigidheddleweaving From what I see it looks like your arm or leg will hurt after a while operating the flying shuttle. People may get some health problems (Tenosynovitis) and maybe mental problems due to the lack of brain stimulation. Anyway why shouldn’t we use the sun, wind and water to assist our work? Now we can use solar/wind energy for power looms. In the future robots will do all the work and humans can do what they want. I think you would do hand waving (which is a nice hobby) :-)

  • @happyswissman Have you ever operated a hand loom of any kind?

  • @rigidheddleweaving It may be difficult to learn to operate a hand loom and maybe mentally demanding. But we are talking about mass production. Let’s say we both have to make 10,000 square meter of cloth of some kind. I will use a power loom and finish in half a year. You will take 15 years. The work that generated the income for many families can now be done by one factory alone. The problem is not the power loom. The problem is the wealth distribution. All people should benefit.

  • Why the "struggle" by hand? Hand looms are kind to the earth. They require no scarce resources, rebuild communities, provide self-employment and keep alive a heritage that humanity must be proud of.

  • @rigidheddleweaving Yes but the video is not about the art of weaving. I am talking about providing basic clothing for people (mass production). If someone uses hand looms for mass production, it will require scarce resources (human labor etc.) Technology can be used to assist people at their work so that they have more time for other things. I not think one need a hand loom to rebuild communities. Anyway this is not to discourage art-work or personal hobby.

  • @happyswissman That is if only 1 person is at the loom, and yes thank you for making my point for me. The work that generated the income for many families would be lost (it's being done by a single factory). I fail to see the benefit of that. Maybe I am old fashioned, but it's my learning that man needs to work. If robots do everything for us, wages are lost, and if ever a day comes that robots do everything for us, it's not a world I would want to live in.

  • @kingdomofwitches they prob dont have the technology, nice video but better narration would have helped

  • when you get the same outcome or even better outcome ,why the struggle by hands
