Dick Cavett is great. He has a very understated way of being funny. It's a more intelligent way of being funny than the "in your face" comics. I guess it's called subtle humor. I prefer it.
Cavett was a great interviewer but his monologues weren't the best from what I can see. I think its because he is better at being a conversationalist rather trying to give one liner jokes in a comedic monologue. Jack Paar was the same way and he thrived just by having a conversation with the audience or a guest when he hosted the Tonight Show and later his weekly "The Jack Paar Show."

Dick is very talented but he sure struck out here.
