An ammonia leak at a near West Side company forced people living nearby to evacuate. The fire department called a rare level three hazardous materials alarm for the ammonia leak at the On-Cor Frozen Foods Building on West Fulton Market- near Racine late Tuesday night.

Additional firefighters and equipment were needed to contain the leak. It's believed it was coming from an open valve for a refrigeration unit at the plant.

The fire department evacuated a couple nearby condo buildings after residents complained about the ammonia fumes.

"We all just kind of felt our eyes and noses burning. We all had to leave the building because it was too much for us," said Chris Sloan.

"We have a balcony on our building. I realized it smelled horrible. We could barely breath out there," said Mike Buran.

No one was hurt. Everyone returned home a couple hours later- after the fumes dissipated.

In actuality, Ammonia, is the BEST refrigerant to work with, because it smells. Other refrigerants like R134a, R22, R404, have no smell, taste, color, or anything. So you don't know you have a leak, and will kill you in a second. There is enough R134a in a pickup truck to kill you in 5 to 10 mins of a leak.

I would like to clear up some misconceptions about ammonia. I work in industrial ammonia refrigeration. You still have plenty of time to get away safely after the eyes and nose starts burning. As long as the wind is not blowing directly at you from the leak. See a white cloud, try to out run it.
