For those wondering why, all Shuttle crewmembers learn to drive the three NASA M113s, because it's felt that, if they have to do an emergency evacuation on the pad, it's best to have them flee any possible explosion in an armored vehicle. (There is also a bunker at the pad, but that would only be used if it was a truly critical situation, since it *might* get blown up by an explosion on the pad.)
