they were paid in google stock not cash. thye'd have a salary to stay on and guide the platform. It's the best way for google to guard against them taking the cash and making a competitor.

you can't as you have sold all the rights to another company, what you can do is start a website from scratch and it won't be as famous as youtube, that if in the selling agreement, Google didn't force you to not build a concurrent website for at least 20 years !
