theaglaukopis - Everyone puts this movie down; it's always omitted from Pasolini retrospectives; it got terrible reviews and Callas never made another movie. But I think it's a masterpiece, a splendid thing, different from any other film of a myth. And she's superb.
Thanks for putting this up!

@cantavoidtrite we cannot say it is Japanese music. The film was shot partly (or fully im not sure) in Turkey. It sounds rather middle eastern. You should check the instrument called "kanun" (its turkish name).

@halsamdu what makes you say this?

OMG OMG OMG Thank you so much, I have been dying to see this.

I'm pretty sure its persian traditional music, not japanese..

A weird and wonderful interpretation of the Medea. Pasolini's minimal use of dialogue in the first 40 minutes is a strange antithesis to the dialogue driven Euripides text and upon passing the initial reservation of this fact the mesmerising scenery and haunting story take over and carry the viewer along in a wave of emotion and into the soul of Medea.
Callas' acting is mesmerising and once again highlight her phenomenal ability to turn everything she touches into gold. Callas is legend.

it's not all japanese, i think, but what is japanese sounds like music used in kabuki. you can listen to some of that music on spotify -simply type kabuki- or in other videos here on you tube (check out 'tamasaburo'). Someone with better knowledge could tell you more, and 'music from kabuki' is a bit generic, but I am ignorant on the topic. Sometimes, though, I listen to this music on spotify when I want to chill and meditate, or when I work. sounds like cats fighting at times, but I like it!

@sgarpia I love the music that is used here. Could you please tell me what kind of Japanese music that is used here? It reminds me of Balinese music. Thanks.
Thank you very much for this beautiful PPP-film.
