  • The resisdents of Africville did pay taxes. They owned the property they lived on, and I imagine were proud of their belongings. However it probably was a rat infested slum, not at the fault of it's resisdents but due to the neglect of the government to the area. The government could have cared less if these people starved or froze to death. It's a horrible part of Halifax's history but not something that should be ignored.

  • Ignorance is not a good look on anyone.

  • im not looking to anger anyone here, but weren't there several white families in africville?

  • @BlackJays not so much less, as more well hidden.

  • I was there at the africville landmark just 3 days ago and now its a dog park and a playground and a park. Racists whites some maybe nice and some not. I saw there protest.

  • @slingtin thanks for your intelligent comment

  • N.Y State abolished slavery in 1827, six years before the British Empire did. Slavery still exists in Africa.

It's all so hard to believe, that Christian Europe could commit such an atrocity, the Brits, Americans, French, etc. As an American I find the Africville videos very interesting. In today's Globe and Mail is the story of the City of Halifax's offer of 3mil. as restitution to the former residents who were displaced from there. Insult upon injury. Squeaky Clean Canada.

  • Slavery was abolished in the British Empire in 1834. Canada became a nation in 1867. While there was slavery in areas that are now part of present day Canada, slavery was never legal in the nation of Canada.

Furthermore, the economy of British North America was different from the American South, so slavery was less common.

  • i think this man at 2:14 is Jay Z's father...dame

  • We're just less vocal about it.

  • There was definitely slavery in Canada, albeit much less than the U.S.
