Probably nothing new here for most preppers, but this shows that a penny stove can run on vegetable oil. Use it for both light and heat. If you do have alcohol they say to use 75% to 90% alcohol (or Everclear), then the wick is replaced by a screw so that the alcahol vapors dont come out.

The wick should be adjustable, that is, you need to pull it out some after it gets too carbonized. Some use a wire in/around the wick to pull it out. All I used was a piece of thick cotton from a teashirt.

With about one fluid ounce of oil, this lamp was still lit and functioning good after about 5 hours.

Here is the penny stove design/method I used: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZzB2MSBm3Q&lc=Ngfj91Us4dWXtFQr2wGbmK8beAA...

You can use some kind of rock/brick, or coat-hanger wire to make a pot stand if you need to heat something up.

Some oils do not burn clean; it may put a slight amount of soot into the air.

A safer alternative is to use a clear glass jar(s). Lookup candle lanterns here on YouTube. You can make on out of a glass jar with a lid and wick (actually you can make it without the lid, but the lid is safer and helps prevents the oil from comming out if you tip it over). You can then place this candle lantern inside another larger glass jar for extra safety and to prevent the wind from blowing the flame out.

Later, I enlarged one of the side holes to about the same size as the wick hole usinga a crosstip screewdriver. This allowed me to use an eye droper to refill the tank with oil.

How about multiple wicks around the edge? I think it would be ok if your trying to heat up a larger pot/pan. You'll have to experiment with that concept.

To help the wick soak up all the oil, I think it's good to flatten the concave part on the bottom when building the stove.
