I think this is a wonderful performance.
Gilbert and Sullivan did works the "cocgnicenti" thought frivoulous. Sullivan took this criticism to heart and worked on "serious" works. Like "Ivanhoe." Who remembers that?
This is as close as Sullivan came to "Grand Opera." And it is, to my thinking, the one work that makes the characters most "human." You have to be chalk not to feel for Jack Point.
