Lot folks think their Cotton Mouths here in New Jersey also. But the Common Water Snake can be very aggressive when confronted and if you grab them they will bite the hell out of you. But no posion. Cast a spinner lure over one swimming in pond many years ago hooked him brought him in he was so mad had hell of a time getting hook out of his skin. When I threw him into the edge of pond he came right out after me had to run. Guess he was pissed can't blame him pulling fish hook out his skin.

Its a northern water snake, I caught one of them today that was 4 ft 1/2 it was my 17th snake i caught. I love cacthing snakes and one day i do hope to become a herpetologist. And Theherpetologist62....Dude these types of water snakes and other snakes tend to flatten their bodies when bothered. Another thing if u get to see a snake up close look at its pupils, Cat like pupils mean its venemous, If their pupils are round their harmless, Coral snake is the only with round pupils

thank you, fanmini, im 11 years old and i love reptiles and amphibians, when im older i want to be a herpetologist

You re exactly correct, most all snakes flatten their head and body out,its amazing to me how a herpetologist wouldnt know this
-
theherpetologist62, youre wrong it has a triangle head cuz it flattens out its body and head so it looks bigger

My bad! i didnt know you were way up in maryland or i would have known right away this was a nerodia, w/o question. what through me off was that the snake, from the side, appears to have a nice white stripe on its face, which was making me think of the florida cottonmouth. if im not mistaken though, the cotton does come up to southeastern virginia/norfolk area, in the swampy areas there, which is not TOO far from maryland.. but i doubt anyone will claim that 1000 bucks anytime soon!
Not a cottonmouth, we are too far north for them, Northern MD. Many folks up here believe we do have cottonmouths, but we don't. I have a herpetologist acquaintance who has offered $1000 to any one who can show him a wild cottonmouth in MD, that is, take him to a spot where folks claim cottonmouths live. He hasn't paid anyone yet in several years of spreading the word.
