First, I trained at Trodain for the Don Mole battle, and I trained up for this battle the way any other experienced player would: Training at the secret south-western island that's not visible on the world map, where Liquid Metal Slimes can be found. (Sometimes they're there, sometimes not. It all depends on luck)
