The Pharaohs' Woman (1962) starring Linda Cristal, Pierre Brice, John Drew Barrymore. Directed by Viktor Tourjansky.

Semi epic romance adventure with a fabulous cast of Eurocult actor. The story is first and foremost a romance even though there are implications of war and conspiracies. The initial set-up is pretty cool: a girl is saved from the river by a man. Once on the boat, three men, all friends, vie for Akis (Linda Cristal), including the crazed Pharaoh (Armando Francioli). Pierre Brice plays the Pharaoh's physician and John Drew Barrymore plays Sabaku Prince of Bubastis. Akis regrets having being rescued but stays on the boat in order to go to the city of Bubastis.

Things get complicated when the Pharaoh and Sabaku go to war.

This is Linda Cristal's best role. She plays her role in a knowingly campy way, which is better than her mostly uninspired turn in Legion of the Nile. The 2 main actors give good performances. The fighting threesome is believable and intense. John Drew Barrymore is excellent as usual, giving an intense performance that rings true. Pierre Brice plays the dashing hero in his reliable way. Brice was ridiculously handsome.

The production values and soundtrack are excellent. All in all, a fine Peplum that tries to avoid cliches (there are sparingly few of them) with a fun melodramatic story-line.

Enjoy.

  • Thanks for posting this wonderful film!

  • So glad you added this film. I've been wanting to see it forever. Makes a nice companion piece to Linda Cristal's other Egyptopeplum "Legions of the Nile" (one of my all-time favorites). That one paired her with the great Ettore Manni; in this one it's fun to see Pierre Brice just a year or two away from his resounding success as Winnetou.

  • Another goldie! Great that you posted this!
