Marian Wright Edelman, President and Founder of the Children's Defense Fund, argues that in addition to the moral motivations for keeping children in school, there are financial reasons as well. She explains that making early investments in health and education prevent more expensive costs later on, arguing "these numbers are going to kill us."

-----

Founder and President of the Children's Defense Fund Marian Wright Edelman talks with Harvard University's Charles Ogletree about her work in ending the "cradle to prison pipeline". She discusses the social and economic conditions that have created a system where millions of children are born without hope for a better future. - Aspen Institute

Marian Wright Edelman was born in and grew up in Bennettsville, South Carolina, one of five children.

In 1963, after graduating from Yale Law School, Marian Wright Edelman worked first in New York for the NAACP Legal and Defense Fund, and then in Mississippi for the same organization. There, she became the first African American woman to practice law. During her time in Mississippi, she worked on racial justice issues connected with the civil rights movement, and she also helped get a Head Start program established in her community.

As part of the efforts of Marian Wright Edelman and the Children's Defense Fund on behalf of children, she has also advocated pregnancy prevention, child care funding, health care funding, prenatal care, parental responsibility for education in values, reducing the violent images presented to children, and selective gun control in the wake of school shootings.

  • The US has been living in a fool's paradise for most of its existence.

Let's not forget that the first major industry of the emerging nation was slavery coupled with the eradication of the indigenous peoples of the continent.

The US has changed the world for the better in many ways, but the callous disregard for the welfare of those less fortunate in your own country only reinforces the belief that America is not necessarily that beacon on the hill we hear so much about.

  • Once again the language of "investment" - honestly, is there any social problem in America that can escape from stupid "market solutions" that only make the situation worse? The entire country is capitalism obsessed yet still wonders why inequality is so vast.

  • Get a grip on reality

all those numbers are from REPORTED numbers

Do you think in some 3rd world country they are even bothering to report a low weight baby?? They probably don't even have scales or know how to read them.

If you are going to use numbers make sure they are valid.

  • You can have rich ppl while having the middle class equivalent, tho. They don't have to be poor unless the drive's nonexistant. The less fortunate have made way many a time.

Sadly, in America, being bad is celebrated & an illiterate dumbass is idolized.

Personally, I feel forcing diversity plays a part in the madness, too. But that's another topic altogether.

  • you can't have rich people without having poor people equality is a foreign concept to the capitalist system don't fool yourself it's eggs and omelets you can't have a respectable rich gentleman without having his polar opposite to compare him to and when you get right down to it money is what drove people into prison in the first place remove money from the equation and you can easily release 90% of the prisoners
