From the Weihnachtsoratorium / Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248) of J. S. Bach, 'Bereite dich, Zion', performed by the legendary British mezzo-soprano, Dame Janet Baker. I find Dame Janet's rendition admirable for its fidelity to the more difficult Bach Baroque style, as she sings the lines whole, sans breaks for catches of breath - Bach rarely gave his singers any chance to breathe! I also love the more audible organ heard giving harmonic accompaniment in this version - something I miss in most other performances of this popular Christmas aria.

[I know it's way past - or much too early - for Christmas, but I can listen to this beautiful aria any day of the year !]

---------

Nr. 4 Arie (Alt)

Bereite dich, Zion, mit zärtlichen Trieben,
den Schönsten, den Liebsten bald bei dir zu sehn.
Deine Wangen
müssen heut viel schöner prangen,
eile, den Bräutigam sehnlichst zu lieben!
Bereite dich, Zion...

-----

ENGLISH:

Make ready, Zion, with tender desire
To see the fairest, the dearest with you soon.
Your cheeks
Must today look lovelier
Hasten, to love the Bridegroom most longingly!

  • Trends come and go . Sound musicianship and a good ear like Sir Nevilles will aöways prevail. And Janet Baker is jist beautiful..

  • good Job... even the pronounciation of the old German... really really good and impressive... but can I just say that in general this piece is played a little too fast...

  • She still is best at singing Lieder.

  • Incredible. Such fluidity, even tone, expressivity... and of course her astounding breath control! I can't imagine getting through those phrases the way she does. Very stylish. Inspiring!
