Today my wife put Peroxide in our 16 year old daughters ear today after she complained about some discomfort. My wife had used it before with no issue. This time my daughter experienced immediate agonizing pain so we ran off to the emergency room. Turned out the eardrum was perforated. Don't use your kids as Ginny pigs for this remedy, especially infants. Have a doctor look at first.

An ear infection has to be pretty goddamn severe and ongoing to damage the drum.
The only real danger of using peroxide is you can dry out the canal causing irritation if you use peroxide too frequently.
No doctor will recommend any home remedies because that's a $100 office visit they wont get paid for.

I have used peroxide for years and now do my children with it. I like it for the simple fact that it is easy to determine if there is an ear infection to where they need to go to the doctor. I use a flashlight that I hold in my mouth and a bobby pin to help scoop out the wax that has floated to the surface. You must be extremely carefull however not to go into the ear canal. If there is wax that will not emerge I will wait about 2 months and due again. After a few trys it will come up!

AND WHAT WOULD THOSE MORE EFFECTIVE TREATMENTS BE?

I like to use my father's cordless drill.

i use a capri-sun straw, i find the best way is to scoop out the earwax with straws and objects like this.
