Mansion on the Hill

Written by Bruce Springsteen

This is Bruce Springsteen's version of a Hank Williams classic.

Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Zeum, SF, May 2004

Blind Willies performed a set before a San Francisco School of the Arts music/drama premiere, Hard Travelin', based on John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath and Woody Guthrie's songs, adapted by Susan Stauter. Following the set, Alexei and Annie were troubadours accompanying the Joad family from Oklahoma's Dust Bowl to California's Depression Era migrant camps in the 1930s.

Alexei Wajchman: guitar, vocal
Annie Staninec: fiddle

Filmed by Dan Ryan.

If Springsteen stole anything (the title notwithstanding), he stole from these. But there ain't no stealin' in Country, goddamnit!

  • True, Springsteen drew a line from Hank's song "A Mansion on the Hill." This, of course, is customary in folk tradition. However, it is incorrect to say it's a Hank cover. Regardless, you performed a fine rendition--very beautiful.
