The use of lasers and radar to measure distances for everyday purpose is now common. Both devices are used to measure much larger distance to the moon and nearby planets. Here is a brief explanation of how that is done.

  • impossible to "hit" a reflector so far away. The beam will be km's wide at the moon. And not neccesary to use them. Using only the moonsurface for reflection the distance has been measured since 1963.
