A little bit of background info: the mural was painted by Under the Radar (UTR) as part of the subtext festival. The artists were Danilo and Javid.

"We wanted to celebrate the achievement and contribution of Jack Layton to the GTA, and we decided there was no better time to do this then in the immediate aftermath of his passing. Danilo painted Jack's face, which was carefully selected as it shows those smiling eyes that were so genuine and heart-warming.

Javid painted his name in a combination of colors associated with our national identity. We decided to write "Pillar of the Community" as a response to the way we felt about Jack's role in local politics and the fact that we were actually painting on a pillar!
