Actually, opossums cannot carry rabies and they are not affected by rattlesnake venom. It's because of their low body temperature.

However, they sometimes carry a parasite that can be fatal to horses if the horse ingests infected opossum scat.

In my state, this is one animal you cannot own. My state offers animal permits for certain native species, but if you have an opossum as a pet, you cannot get a permit. If you have one, you will be fined and the animal will be confiscated and euthanized. And this is because they wrongly think this is a rabid animal! You know they have the smallest brains (in proportion) of any North American animal, but you don't need brains if you are that adaptable.
