I don't think I could have a rat / mouse / gerbil / hamster. I have a dog and 2 cats, they would be thinking, "snack time!" It would not be a pretty sight.

Rats can usually get along with cats and dogs. Just watch out for "ratting" dogs like terriers. Those are usually bad news. otherwise they should be safe in their cage by day, and supervised when out anyway. :)
