Princess, real name, Desiree Heslop, was born in the uk, and was a session singer, before being spotted by Pete Waterman of Stock Aitkin and Waterman Productions. They had written the lyrics to a tune, and needed the right singer for the song. After hearing her sing as she was walking through the corridor of a studio he was also working in, she was given a demo of the track and asked to put her vocals to it. The rest as they say is history.
The song was released in June 1985 and reached top ten within six weeks. SAY I'M YOUR NUMBER ONE has sold over 1 million copies worldwide. The EPONYMOUS album went gold and yielded four top ten singles, one of which was part of a movie soundtrack.
Princess was in demand - appearances on "Top of the Pops", appearances on the various morning TV shows, augmented by radio and TV appearances worldwide. Live appearances in front of hundreds of thousands, at Artist Against Apartheid, Live Aid, Aids benefit and Help A London Child.
In 1987 Princess signed to Polydor worldwide and set off to LA to record her second album. Ballard and Magness writers and producers for Michael Jackson, Richard Burgess writer and producer for 5 Star, Fox and Drinkwater writers and producers for Chico DeBarge and Trevor Lawrence Stevie Wonders writer and sax player were all drafted to lend that US feel to the album.
Isaac Hayes interviewed her on his radio show at Kiss FM, Stevie Wonder came to her recording session, she recorded with Roy Ayers, Angela Winbush and Chaka Khan. She stayed in the states for many more years, and went on to perform at the same concert as Lil Kim, Donel Jones, Shaggy, Buju Banton and Beres Hammond, at The Guinness Soul/ Reggae Festivals in New York. Princess traveled to Africa to take part in Panafest (Ghana). That bill also had Stevie Wonder, Culture and Sounds Of Blackness.
