Jumping genes are the focus of Wenfeng An, assistant professor in the WSU School of Molecular Biology. These genes, which are able to multiply and move to different genomic locations, are responsible for a wide variety of genetic outcomes, ranging from the rainbow hues seen in Indian corn to sporadic cases of colon cancer or hemophilia A. An is specifically studying how this L1 insertion (long interspersed elements type 1) is regulated in germ cells such as spermatozoa.
