Bike theft at UCSB has been a longstanding and growing concern for many students and parents, but the department of Public Safety is here to help. Through UCSB's Bait Bike program, the UCPD actively helps the UCSB community by deterring bicycle theft through their new gps tracking system. Informational skit written by Ariel T. Bournes and Officer Matthew Stern. Filmed and edited by Brian Wray. Special thanks to Rhandy Siordia and Cody Conley.

  • A little on the penalties for theft? Sure, here they are!

    - Bicycle Theft; Fine = $4,000-$20,000

    - Joyriding on a bike, Fine = $4,000

    – Possess a stolen. Felony Bail = $20,000

    – Bike with defaced Serial Number. Felony Bail = $20,000

  • @UCSBPublicSafety You must be high...With those numbers you made up It would cheaper to steal a car. The only thing worse then a theif is a liar.

  • @openbreakwhat @openbreakwhat The penalties come directly from the Santa Barbara Superior Courts website and can be found on sbcourts.org/general_info/bailschedule/ If you have any specific questions about penalties the court would be the most appropriate place to contact.

  • Tips for keeping your bike Safe? How about:

    - Get it registered at UCPD. The fee is $10 and totally worth the expense; UCPD recovers about six times the national average when it comes to stolen registered bicycles.

    - Get a solid U-lock... possibly two. Always lock your bicycle's frame to a non-quick release tire and then to a bicycle rack.

    - Always park your bike in a rack to limit the chance someone will just carry away your bicycle.

Got questions or tips? Leave them here!

  • @UCSBPublicSafety Thanks for the reply, and I see that you guys take bike theft more serious then most communities. I'm a cyclist who always fears getting my rig stolen, I have a little over a grand invested into it. I apologize for the liar part my good man. I just thought the penalty was way over stated. It's good to see that someone is tryn' to really crack down on these bike thieves. I'm sorry.. I was wrong to call you out. Keep up the good work man. One
