@ridingisasport Many people believe the blankets actually make the horse colder in the harsher winters by matting/pressing down the thick natural winter coat, eliminating the air pockets there would normally be that keeping the horse warm :) Winters here in Manitoba Canada for example are VERY cold but even then outdoor boarded horses will be just fine with no blankets over them :)

@GoodRedBlackRatio while that is normally true an elderly or otherwise compromised horse may not have the quality coat/body fat to stay warm in extreme cold especially if it is damp (snow/freezing rain) or windy and benefit from blanketing. I would advise keeping that kind of horse inside on the worst days it's not always possible and a blanket is better than nothing
