Mythbusters - Cooking Oil as Economical Diesel Fuel

@chillerized Probably not. Most people have been convinced that diesel is some tricky mixture that needs to be just right. For the newer diesels that's more important, but conventional diesels will run on old engine oil, trans fluid, veggie oil, peanut oil, etc.
The only con with veg is that it can gel easily in the cold, so a Y-fitting and a separate heated tank is often used so you can switch fuels after the engine warms and then switch back 10min away from your destination.

@Raven0628 The stuff on Top Gear was just White Spirits, which is just Mineral Spirits in the US.
Essentially, veggie oil works exactly the same and from what I've heard it actually works better in most older diesels. I ran out of gas once in my 81 VW Rabbit and got some veg oil in a 10oz cup from a restaurant that was across the street and I was on my way again. I keep a bottle of used ATF fluid mixed with used(but filtered) oil in the car now in case my gauge tricks me again...

part 2
Another way to use WVO in your diesel car is to convert it to biodiesel. There are many resources online explaining how to do this. With any of these 3 types of alternate fuel for your diesel engine, they cannot be used when cold, not as much of a problem as with biodiesel vs WVO and SVO but biodiesel gels at a higher temp than regular diesel

Part 1 The way they did it in this video will kill your engine if you try it. If you are to run on waste veggie oil (WVO), it must be filtered and all water must be taken out of it. If you want to run straight veggie oil (SVO) you must just make sure there is no water. Once you have filtered oil with no water in it, you must make sure it gets to your fuel system at the consistency of diesel fuel, meaning you have to heat up the oil or your fuel system will fail because it is caked up with fat.

The first diesel engine ran on peanut oil...which is what most deep fryers use.

It's relay cool but a guy here in canada say you engine need to be warm in order to work and the oil need to be oxidize, I'v also seen a vid with top geard uk where a com. devoloped an additive to make it work strait.

really you can run a diesel engine with french frie oil
