Despite criticism, two members of the House of Representatives are planning on introducing their own version of the Protect IP Act. They also said: "The technology industry is leading America out of the recession, and inadvertent damage to the tech sector could not happen at a worse time." And they're right, if websites have to be worried about every user-these sites will inevitably be shut down. So who really benefits from this legislation? Other than Hollywood, it's really hard to say.

  • The first amendment right is not a right to steal. You have a right to free speech, but copyright owners have the right to protect their products.

The copyright owners aren't doing anything wrong. The people doing something wrong are those who pirate or steal copyrighted material.

I'd like to see some suggestions as to how you think this problem should be handled, if not by SOPA or PIPA. If it is not dealt with, sooner or later, laws like this will pass.

  • First amendment rights? What about the rights of the owners of the copyrighted material?

If we don't hold websites and isp's responsible, then who do we hold responsible? If we try to prosecute the actual pirateers, many would then complain that their right to privacy is being violated because law enforcement would have to patrol blogs such as this and spy on people.

As an owner of copyrighted material, how would you suggest my rights be preserved while maintaining your right to free speech?

  • This has nothing to do with Hollywood. The government knows that the internet is a powerful tool used by the people to fight corrupt governments.
