Ctrl + alt + 1 (in cs4 its 2-5)selects the channel information of the channel 1(RGB)channel. if you're image is only black and white, it doesn't matter which channel you select.
ctrl shift i, is to invert that selection. Because you're actually only selecting the white image. Therefore to fill the space with black you need to invert it.
I will try it out! but Bugmeyer's tutorial was still good. He tipped about the dodge on corners, and explained it too.
