@grave4grave Well, also don't forget games like Mass Effect and Star Control 2. both of which have several nods to the Cthulu Mythos. Granted, they aren't horror games... Tho there's plenty of nightmare fuel with the ORZ from SC2...

@Metatheist: Hence Spoiler :P, the tentacled master boss in the background is an obvious reference to H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu and his cosmic horror visions of story telling, in fact most of the game takes many nods towards the master, including the unitology religion and it's convergance, the transformed necromorphs and let us not forget the insanity. oh the insanity ^_~

@grave4grave Yeah, but those sort of things are like the premise of nearly any horror tale. Insanity, fear of the unknown, and ancient or alien esoteric religions/artifacts, have been used in stories before H.P. Lovecraft, and will be continued to be used, because those sort of concepts can be used over and over again and still be scary. This is hardly a nod to Lovecraft. Check out Amnesia: The Dark Descent if you want to see Lovecraftian Lore in a horror game.

@standdownman I agree that Amnesia has more lovecraftian Lore, but I still believe there is quite a bit of Lovecraft in DS, Unfathomable alien intelligences, humanity degenerating into alien creatures, creepy cultists who worship alien artifacts and hope to bring about the rise of the Great Old Ones. The end boss an Old One. You can't really kill them, only contain them or delay the inevitability of their ascension and agree or not Chapter7 of DS2 contains an NPC called 'Howard Phillips :P
