This is the first day of the Rripangu Yirdaki Masterclass 2008, we spent a good part of the day 'hunting' for yirdaki with the Master showing us how it is done. A raw blank is tested for sound by father and son team Djalu and Vernon Marritjngu.

The unexpected find of the day was a sugarbag hive, the sweet honey from this native bee known to Yolngu people as Yarrpany was delicious and the first taste of this delicacy by all participants. Dopiya, the Queen of honey, showed us her skills at cutting out the hive. Honey from the shop will never taste this good!

Masterclass participants commenced making their own instrument in the bush, with Djalu and family assisting.

Rripangu Yirdaki acknowledges the support of the Yothu Yindi Foundation, Rio Tinto Alcan, and the Department of Regional Development, Primary Industry, Fisheries and Resources (DBIRD).

Expressions of interest are sought for the 2009 series of Masterclasses, see link below for details:

  • nice video

  • Thank you for your comments, I'm glad you enjoy the videos!

  • wow! I am envious... in a nice way i mean. I hope all those lucky people are enjoying themselves. What a wonderful life experience for them.

  • Just finished my first real try at building a yirdaki using ahorn-wood from the mountains here in Austria (sandwichtechnique). I could only blow into a piece smelling like industrial glue after a lot of work. Looks like flying over and build one with the Djalu family is the easier way :-) Thanks for the video, great! PS: My stick is dry now, and sounds remarkably good.
