A breathtaking performance by Vince Jones. His RnB influences have taught him to concentrate on feel and feeling more than embroidering with too much decoration: his Bop credentials have given him the chops to tackle anything in the great American songbook.
This rendition predates Kurt Elling's stunningly beautiful reading of "Detour" on the "Flirting With Twilight" album by ten years or more. Was Vince Jones' version an influence on Kurt Elling? The similarity of interpretation is remarkable.

I agree,I think Kurt Elling's version learned some from Vince, but to me they are both wonderful.

Vince is the man.
Used to have this on Vinyl (still do actually)... It's so good, it's priceless. I've got Trustworthy Little Secrets on CD, which is also brilliant. I want to upload some of my favourite tracks from that album, but I'm not sure how Vince would feel about me doing that... I don't suppose anyone knows his opinion on having his music on youtube? I'd love to know.
Thank you for the upload - hopefully more people will be able to hear why Vince is so highly regarded... Legend!

I think a uploading a few songs i very different for sharing an entire album. I presume with jazz musicians a large part of their income comes from gigging so anything that gives them exposure is a good thing.
Vince really is a master of his voice and love his trumpet playing too.
